Selective Flood Insurance Coverage can ease the pain of a flood loss. Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States, and nearly everybody has some risk of flooding. Flood waters are far more likely to damage your home than fire. Included is damage from surface water, flood-induced mud slides, sewer backups, flood water seepage or subsiding land. Homeowner policies DO NOT cover flood damage. Homes in a special flood hazard zone face a one-in-four chance of being flooded over the life of a 30-year mortgage. There is only a one in 100 chance of these homes being damaged by fire.
